Volume 89 | July-August 2026

Executive Summary

The past few months have reinforced a structural shift that we identified in prior Industry Updates: AI, consolidation, data ownership, and accountability are converging into a new agency operating model. AI is becoming an operating layer. Agency ecosystems are consolidating around control and scale. And marketing economics are moving from effort toward outcomes. Current developments increasingly validate this metamorphosis.

Three signals matter most.

  1. WPP is stabilizing but not yet growing; its better-than-feared results bought management time for restructuring.
  2. Measurement is consolidating, with Nielsen’s $2.15 billion DoubleVerify deal potentially combining audience measurement and media-quality verification under one owner.
  3. AI capability is becoming a leadership issue rather than merely a technology issue, with new research suggesting that CMOs themselves may be lagging behind their organizations in AI proficiency.

Our takeaway: The competitive battleground is shifting from who has the best agency roster to who has the best-managed marketing ecosystem—data, AI, agencies, technology, scopes, measurement, and commercial accountability working as one system.
