There has been continued confusion in our industry about the difference between a scope of work, or statement of work (SOW), and a brief. Some may wonder: Do we need both of these? Are they redundant or complementary? Both these client documents are essential to guide agencies. These documents complement each other. They are initiated by the client, but agencies are often invited to collaborate on refining them until they provide absolute clarity. They are produced sequentially (SOW then Brief) and offer varying degrees of detail to support their primary purposes.
